How Domains Work

  • .org

Usually means the institution is a non-profit. Example:https://www.aota.org/

  • .gov

Usually means the institution is a government organization. Example: https://www.bls.gov

  • .edu

Usually signifies the institution is related in some way to the education system. Example: https://www.pointloma.edu

  • .com

Usually means that the institution is for commercial use. Example: https://www.occupationaltherapy.com/

Others you may see: 

  • .net was meant originally for networking institutions but now is also used commonly for commercial uses. 
  • .mil was meant for military institutions but isn't used as often as it used to be. 
  • .(country) are country code top-level domains. Examples would include: .cn (China) .de (Germany) .uk (United Kingdom)

  3. Steer Clear of Commercial Sites.
