Instruction to Training

Congratulations! If you're reading this you have probably just been hired by the University Library as a student assistant or a work-study student. Any questions not answered in this LibGuide can be answered by your supervisor or Library Administration.

Student workers are important to the functioning of the Library. You are a valuable asset. You help the library run smoothly for our users: the students, staff, faculty and administration of Point Loma Nazarene University and members of the peninsula community.

Library work is also valuable to you: From it you can get:

  • invaluable research skills
  • training in current technology
  • convenient and flexible campus employment
  • excellent work experience for resumé building
  • customer service skills
  • time management and prioritizing skills
  • quick thinking and problem solving skills
  • verbal and communication skills
  • a quiet and pleasant place to work
  • a way to meet a diverse set of people


In order to help you get a good start, this tutorial will take you through the basic concepts that you need to know. Some sections are general, some more specific to what you will be doing on the job. Your supervisor will tell you which skills you need to master, but be aware that this training will be ongoing.
