Beyond the Basic Google Search: Introduction

This presentation given at Point Loma Nazarene University's 2014 Fall Festival "Ask A Professor." The guide presents a look at Internet search engines and directories to enhance your search strategies.

I found information but...

You know how to use the basic Google search box for Internet searches.

But what if you...

  • Aren't satisfied with results.
  • Find there are too many results.
  • Look to narrow your search.
  • Want to find a way to make the Internet work for you.

The purpose of this guide is to provide advanced skills that will take you beyond the basic Google search. Use the tabs above to learn about other search engines and directories and become a more savvy searcher.

The sites listed under the Search Engines tab are search engines that provide great control over your search experience.  This control can be in the form of additional search options.

The sites listed under the Directories tab are compiled, organized and annotated lists of Internet sites.

The Alerts tab tells how to have the Internet searched for you even though you aren't actively searching.

Disclaimer: Point Loma Nazarene University has no control over outside web sites.  Within the sites noted above you may find broken links, sites that you do not agree with or sites not in keeping with PLNU standards.
